Unfortunately, his goals have yet to be realized. America was moving this direction until the Affirmative Action laws came to be. America's struggle for social integratrion has been hampered by the special interest groups which continue to divide us.
The most obvious example is seen in the hiring/promotion practices of corperations and college admission standards. Too often, someone is given the job (or university acceptance) based soely on the color of one's skin or ethnic background. This sends the dangerous message: "you won this not because of your skills, but your race". The consequences are two-fold: Competing applicants (who may be equally or more qualified) are "disenfranchised" (the lib's new play-word) and so are those who feel they should be considered on the basis of their acheivements, not skin color or surname. Our government has mandated that such quotas be filled, and in an effort to do so, people of all color and ethnic backgrounds are offended.
I wanted to be a police officer a few years back. I went to the Police Headquarters in Austin, TX and asked for an application. The lady behind the desk told me I'd be wasting my time, since the Department is only hiring women and blacks (or anybody else who wasn't white). I guess this is an example of how generations pay for the mistakes of their fathers. It's not a mandate of God, as most people tend to blame Him. rather, it's US HUMANS who do this to ourselves.
Is THIS what Dr. King was talking about? Of course not. Not until we stop classifing each other COMPLETELY will America be TRUELY colorblind. The good Dr. King must be turning over in his grave.
It is the self-segregation of the special-interest groups that fuel racial/ethnic tensions in modern America. It begins in the home, where children are taught not to play with "that white boy" or "that black girl" next door. This attitude of seperatism blossoms in grade school, where it continues on into high school, and then college where students form clubs that exclude those of a differant race/ethnicity. These attitudes then become staples of mainstream America, where lawyers and special interest groups lobby congress to further divide America.
So how do we fix this threat to national security? I consider this America's main security threat because such attitudes are alive and fueled, yet kept silenced for the sake of "political correctness". Silence (the absence of open dialougue) is the evil that keeps America from fulfilling Martin Luther King's dream.
Well, it's just not cool to be white anymore. We're all just a bunch of rich, spoiled, radical racists, right? The white man is being touted as the modern day 'antichrist'. Oppressing all who are not exactly like us is our mission in life. After all, it was the evil white man who imported slaves in the 18th century, and raped and pillaged the indians in the 19th century. Therefore white people are exclusively hate-filled, oppressive beasts.The white man must be punished! (I suppose I better make it clear that I am being sarcastic here, after all, so many people actually BELIEVE that the modern white male is exactly this.) In truth, it was the American white man who FREED the slaves (and Abe was a Republican, too). It was America that put a permanent end to slavery in most of the world.
And punished we are. All over the nation you hear of latinos, blacks, asians, etc. who long ago formed groups advancing their own. The NAACP and LULAC are good examples. Imagine if you would a United Anglo College Fund, or National Association for the Advancement of White People. There is such a group by the way, and their mere formation brought criticism just because of their name! Anyone who dares stand up for the rights of white people are automatically judged as a racist bigot. What ever happened to equality?
Equality is no longer the agenda. Rather, it's a reversal of previous attitudes. If left unchecked, will these attitudes worsten only to begin the cycle all over? Not until we stop categorizing everybody will the cycle cease. A crime is a crime is a crime. Hate is hate, regardless of who the victim or perpetrator is. If we really want a color-blind society, we must stop referring to each other by color. PERIOD.
For one, I believe America, as a people, need to simply STOP referring to one another as "white", "black", "hispanic", "asian", "American Indian", etc... Are we not all Americans? When we place each other in groups, we put up barriers between one another. The consequence is a loss of dialougue. Fortunately, we have enough people in all these "ethnic groups" who are smart enough to ignore such trivial facts like "my skin is white and yours is black, and therefore we are different and have different needs". Weren't all men created equal?
The solution to this problem calls for an end to groups like the NAACP, LULAC, and any other organization that calls for the promotion of any ethnic group, race, or sex. At one time, such groups had a purpose. They wanted equality. Their pupose of equality has been achieved. People of all sex, race, and ethnicity vote, hold elected office, run corperations, etc. Such groups are no longer needed and they KNOW this. That's why they are running scared. Why do you think the NAACP sues someone new every month over trivial matters? Appearently for some, equality is not enough.They must justify their continued existance by tring to keep their constituents in the "victim" mentality and pit them against others in order to retain memberships. These leftist organizations who are bent on dividing America need to be dissolved - yesterday.
This responsibility lies with the members and supporters of such groups, and NOT the government. If you TRULY love your neighbor as yourself, then abandon your association with these leftist groups and embrace your neighbor, whatever color his skin may be. And dog-gonnit, get to church and make peace with God! For this is how HE wants us to live. If we can't live in harmony, what makes you think God will let us all into Heaven?
It all begins at home.I refuse to refer to my neighbor as "Hispanic" or "black" or "white". Instead, I'd rather call him by his name. Sure, we DO need to refer to such charictaristics when someone needs identifying (such as when the police know they need to look for someone like a tall, white male with brown hair and buck teeth in a blue t-shirt). But in all other social aspects, the only way to be TRULY colorblind is to 'just do it'.
